The Christian Worldview: A Memory Verse Curriculum - Post #1

Each time I teach Biblical Foundations for Curriculum at CIU the students develop a sampling of a worldview memory verse curriculum.  Since Christian school students should know the primary source for their worldview, it seems appropriate that they learn the answers to worldview questions by memory.   This will prepare them to give direct answers to an inquirer’s questions as to why they believe as they do and also provide the benchmark for evaluating content within disciplines.  There are many ways to organize this curriculum but the authors that will be sharing their work have organized their curriculum around four basic worldview questions---Reality, Knowledge (Truth), Man, and Value.  Within each category developmentally appropriate verses are selected.  The verses within each category are also linked to specific worldview questions.  Over the next three weeks the Lowrie Center will offer a sample of this year’s work.  Make note of the questions and the verses and you too can get started on developing a collection of memory verses that once learned will provide the foundation for a biblical worldview.

Genesis 2:4 These are the generations of the heavens and the Earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the Earth and the heavens.

Middle School

Where did creation come from?

Revelation 4:11 Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created.

High School

How was the earth created and filled?

Genesis 2:4-9, 18-23 These are the generations of the heavens and the Earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the Earth and the heavens. When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up-for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground-then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there He put the man whom He had formed. Psalm 139:13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.


Middle School

What is man’s condition?

Romans 5:1-8 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,  and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,  and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.  For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die- but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.


High School

What is man’s nature?:

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.

Boy, this author sure does require a lot of memorization for the upper levels.  That's not a bad think, of course, but whew! 

I wonder how much time this person would give to the students to memorize those longer verses: a week? a month? a quarter? a semester?

We require a lot of our students, but we try to make it fun. For example, in 1st grade we memorize John 3:14-21 over a three week period. We work on it daily in Bible time, explaining the words and meaning verse by verse. We say the verses, sing the verses, put motions to the verses, but most importantly, we make sure the students understand the verses in their hearts not just their heads. The preschool and Kindergarten students do one verse at a time, memorizing a new verse each week. For the older students, we do a new section of verses every 3-4 weeks. Just as we have students memorizing dates and events for history class, we have them learning Bible verses for Bible class...and occasionally for math class and history class and well, we try to incorporate God's Word into all we teach, so the students get the importance of how God is the creator of all things and His Word is applicable in all areas of our lives.  

There is a special beauty in knowing longer passages as part of the overall Bible Memory curriculum. 

Here at CIU our president asks students to join him in memorizing an entire book of the New Testament over the course of a year.  During a spring chapel President Jones by memory dramatically recites the entire book from memory as his message.  It is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful chapels each year---what great modelling. 

It is not any different than the English department assigning large portions of Romeo and Juliet or MacBeth ...or poetry to a student to memorize.  However long after Romeo and Juliet , MacBeth or some item of poetry has been erased from memory...God's Word will remain in the heart.
