Recognized as one of the fathers of the modern era of Christian schooling in America, Roy W. Lowrie, Jr. was the founding president of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and headmaster at Delaware County School in Newtown Square, PA for over 25 years. Through a friendship and common interest in promoting Christian school education, Dr. William Male and Dr. Roy Lowrie began the Institute for Christian School Administration in 1971 on the campus of Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana. This Institute became a gathering place for Christian school administrators during the rapid expansion of schools during the '70s and '80s.
Through this annual intensive week of instruction on the biblical basis for schooling, a strong networking relationship among leaders across America was established. These annual gatherings, and deep friendships led to discussions that led to the formation of ACSI in 1978.
In response to the growing interest in the Christian school movement, Grace Seminary began a masters degree program to train administrators to not only lead biblically but establish schools on the solid footing of a Christian philosophy of education. Both the masters degree and the Institute, now known as the International Institute for Christian School Educators (IICSE), were moved to the campus of Columbia International University (CIU) in 1994. Today CIU’s College of Education builds on the foundations laid by Dr. Male and Dr. Lowrie through its Master of Education degrees in Administration and Curriculum & Instruction in addition to a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. The Lowrie Center hosts the annual Institute as a mean to continue the tradition of preparing leaders and teachers to think and teach Christianly.
In 2010 Columbia International University created the Lowrie Center for Chrisitan School Education at Columbia International University to honor Dr. Lowrie’s legacy. Roy's wife, Peg; son, Roy Leon; daughter-in-law, Ruth; and daughters, Janet Nason and Ellen Lowrie Black have all taught in the IICSE and made significant contributions to the field of Christian schooling.
The mission of the Lowrie Center for Christian School Education at Columbia International University is to facilitate international networking, research, innovation and the advancement of enduring ideas foundational to excellence in Christian schooling around the world.
This website is a virtual means to assist the Lowrie Center in fulfilling its mission. It will provide members with a place to grow through instructional recordings spanning the 41 years of the Institute, blog postings and on-going forums as a means of networking. Our site includes the research abstracts of our doctoral students, a speakers' bureau to assist in staff development needs and access to books through the bookstore. The strength of the online Lowrie Center rests in not only its historical resources and current research, but the participation of its growing worldwide membership.
